BEATA KRÓLICZAK-ZAJKO - TRACES

9.02.2024 / at 18:00 / in the Gallery of the S. Staszic Museum, Pila, 18 Browarna St.

My work has always been closely related to human beings..., flesh and blood, our physicality is the best way to talk about our spirituality. I always think about pain, suffering, our sexuality, corporeality - our human condition....

My latest series SIGNS... - is an attempt to record the presence of another person in our consciousness. All the people who make up our reality, our loved ones, parents, children, lovers, co-workers, actors, celebrities, politicians....

Sometimes the greatest influence on us comes from people we have never met in real life....

They are more real, more present than people who have been part of our lives for years.

Our feelings are selective, we - as people, as artists, are always unfair -.

"...You can't love everyone equally,

our hearts will not consent to it" /Robert Lowell/.

                                                                                                                                         Beata Króliczak-Zajko

...These figures, signs, banners, angels, torsos, self-portraits, visions of death - are interesting and compelling at the same time, because they cannot be understood immediately. They have many subtexts, artistic ambiguities and meaningful mysteries... These figures, incomplete, fragmentary, sometimes partial, laid out for study by an archaeologist or anthropologist. On the one hand, they are an exhibitionist self-exposure, and at the same time a kind of vivisection.

These works have an evocative power, they draw the viewer to themselves, captivate him and sometimes overcome his daily habits, imagination and sensitivity. The viewer is impressed by these huge realizations, in monochrome color, in blacks and browns with a subtle grid of nuances of gray refined drawing....

One has the feeling that they are even bas-reliefs, sculptures of monumental, hieratic form. The form is understated, barely marked, lapidary, ephemeral - and at the same time astonishingly exciting: on the one hand they draw each viewer into their orbit, intrigue him or her, and on the other they seem to repel him or her with their darkness and power.

                                                                                                                                                          Dr. Tadeusz Marciniak

...Unique prints in macroformat, made in the author's technique, have been presented in many solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. Beata's work is deeply rooted in the human experience, touching on subjects such as pain, suffering, sexuality, eroticism and carnality. She believes that the physicality of the human form is the best way to express our spirituality. Through her work, she invites us to confront the most invisible part of life - death, which we hide deeper than anything else.

We take the instant transmission of photos and text for granted. As a photojournalist for 60 years, I well recall a different time when I would send packages of undeveloped rolls of film with hand written captions to editors all across the world. DHL and FedEx were vital for my international work, even the regular mail system on occasion. Then digital cameras and the internet came along, changing everything, and a lot more time had to be spent at the computer. Newspapers were the first to take advantage of the technology as they require a quick turnaround for news stories and photo quality was less demanding. It took longer for color magazines to adapt, the sort I worked with, who had to wait until digital photography improved. Online media didn't exist at all until relatively recently but it certainly didn't kill print media, as some predicted. Gdynia/Poland 2016
