ILLUSTRATIONS OF UNPUBLISHED FAIRY TALES

30.03.2023 / 18:00 / Gallery of the Gdynia Film Center / Gdynia ul. Grunwaldzki 2

"Illustrations of Unpublished Fairy Tales" is a series of photographs based on the author's colorful imagination. They can be perceived both as single photographs and as an endless series of fairy tales. It is an invitation to travel in the world of painterly sensitivity, which on the plane of photography meets reality.

The series should be seen as a delight in a dream that could exist and be captured by the camera. The author collects and stores thoughts of images in the form of peculiar theatrical scenes, and then transmits them to us in frames filled with a mysterious, fairy-tale atmosphere. Each of the presented stories is a separate endeavor, providing an opportunity to break away from reality and immerse in the world of fantasy.

A huge role in the presented stories is played by props collected and created for the subsequent photographic works. The author often invites friends to participate in the realizations. He chooses the characters himself, creates the situations and finds the places needed for their realization. During photo shoots, the photographer also enters the role of an actor. During this time, the camera, precisely positioned and triggered by a self-timer, captures the previously conceived scene. The author admits that this way of acting gives him great freedom in creating the whole event.

The works included in the series are thoughtful, orderly and, most importantly, carefully planned frames. They make up an attempt to establish a dialogue with the viewer's childlike sensitivity, leaving room for his own interpretations. This is a series to which it is worth returning and more than once finding in it further details previously overlooked.
