Beata Zięba-Zaborek: Matrescence

Photographs by Beata Zięba Zaborek, Studio Korczak, Głogowska 36/15A, Poznań, Poland, Opening November 3 and 4 at 18:00, Exhibition time - November 03 - November 30, 2023

Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother (an appropriate term for adolescence - the period of adolescence). The birth of a child is a moment of transgression and transformation. Loss of control over the body and life. A constant balancing act between give and take. Roles and relationships with loved ones, with the partner, with friends change. During this crisis time, a woman has to develop new strategies for action, because the previously familiar world no longer exists. Where the old IAM no longer exists, and the new one has not yet formed. Matrescence is a process of forming a new identity, very difficult and often forces us to look into the past. Recalling the image of our mother, a friend who gave birth, characters from books, movies that shaped our ideas about motherhood. We also recall our childhood, reliving it by being a parent again.

Exhibition Matrescence is the result of meetings with women who have recently become mothers. I started the series on motherhood in 2020. My photographic activities grew out of a need to get out of the house and talk (when I started the project as a mother of a 1.5-year-old child). I became a mother twice, and each time I experienced it very strongly. The feelings that accompanied me were extreme, and I wanted to talk about it using photography. The project is carried out thanks to a grant from the Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region.
