The emblem, the flag, the ballot box, the voting place - it is not difficult to recreate the decor of the polling place, to recall it in memory. While the slogan , "elections" heats up the public debate from time to time, the polling place itself seems to be transparent in the process. So is it merely a backdrop or a viable, albeit temporary, space for democracy? What will we see when we go to cast our vote not to a familiar school, but a few streets, villages, towns away, to an office, fire station, village hall, kindergarten or parish hall? What metamorphoses this public space, often the only one in a given locality, undergoes in order to , "correspond to the seriousness of the vote" for the duration of the elections, according to the guidelines of the State Election Commission.
Marek Zakrzewski photographed polling places during presidential, parliamentary, local government, European or by-elections a week ago. He is accompanied by an idea fixe: to find a model polling place. The collection he is creating is a peculiar portrait of contemporary Poland.

Marek Zakrzewski (1985) is a member of the FOTSPOT collective, a photojournalist for the Polish Press Agency, and a teacher of photography at the Communications Technical School in Poznan. A graduate of photography at UAP and philology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, he is in the process of completing his master's degree at the Institute of Creative Photography in Opava, Czech Republic. The project Serious Choices 2022 (VI - XI) is implemented with the support of a grant from the Minister of Culture.
