Three new exhibitions at the Silesian Museum in Katowice!

1/ Light and Darkness. Leszek Mądzik Theatre - temporary exhibition of the Center for Polish Scenography

Leszek Mądzik is a director, photographer, poster artist and creator of the author's model of theatrical space. In the retrospective exhibition, viewers can find the master's commentary on his own artistic achievements, as well as experience the stimuli that are the source of the form and content of his art. The Plastic Stage of the Catholic University of Lublin, founded in 1969, is an artistic laboratory and a place of theatrical discovery. Currently, the artist is also working with the team of the Pantomime Center in Warsaw.

In Leszek Mądzik's work we find the reception of the ideas of Gordon Craig, Peter Schumann, Tadeusz Kantor, Jerzy Grotowski, Józef Szajna. Mądzik's mature oeuvre is characterized by the consistency of a single performance evolving over 50 years.

The artist composes images, changing spatio-temporal sequences or situations involving objects and actors, which, together with music, create an assumed rhythm of performances.

The exhibition being held at the Silesian Museum is a show dedicated to a master of Polish theater. In it, one should appreciate the author's creation that unveils the formal workshop and distinguishes key performances in his many years of achievements. Elements of theatrical spaces that function as installations in the exhibition recall such productions as: Icarus (1974), Looping (1986), End (2020), Breath (1992), Moisture (1978), Bruzda (2006), Herbarium (1976), Gateway (1989), Mirror (2013).

Leszek Mądzik leads the viewer through a retrospective of his theater without words.

The presented objects form a collage of theatrical props acting as actors. Inside the exhibition, the forms brought out of darkness by light, the artist supplements with the sounds of dripping drops of water (Moisture) and air blasts (Breath). The sensual and organic concept of space provokes visitors to interact towards the space initiated by impressionistic photographs capturing the artist's reactions to nature.
The recalled performances evoke reflection on biologically transient life, and open the question of belief in the eternity of the soul and the existence of the absolute.

3/ Open Zone - A new space for the young at the Silesian Museum in Katowice.
vernissage: Friday 28.06, 6:15 pm

Open Zone is an exhibition space made available to the art and design students of our region. It is an initiative in which the boundary between the institution - the host - and the creator - the visitor - is blurred.
The Silesian Museum, together with young artists, invites you to follow the creative activities in cyclical exhibitions in outdoor showcases.

The first exposition is Escape velocity

Exhibition of photographs of people studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.

In astrophysics, the escape velocity of a celestial body refers to the minimum initial velocity an object must have in order to leave the gravitational field of a given celestial body. Those inspired by this law have spent the past few months exploring the cultural meanings associated with imaging the Cosmos. They have looked at images created for scientific purposes and artistic activities. They looked for references in everyday life or built their own universes. The result was a series of photographs that are different perspectives on our presence in the Cosmos.
