Description

I like these non-obvious covers for a magazine about photography. I remember in art classes in elementary school, one of the assignments was to make up a space outside the postcard, which was pasted on an A4 sheet of paper. And that's what I associate this cover with. The postcard features a sepia-toned Polaroid by Nicholas Winter, who photographed Warsaw's New Wilanów in 2009. He is creating a series of sort of new postcards that no one sends out anymore anyway. This is the 3rd part of Daria Kolacka's "Photography as Document" series. Accompanying this text is the DVD "Nicholas Winter. Those who went to camps or colonies when they were kids may remember the peculiar rite of passage that is "Baptism," and this one is shown in photographs by Michal Jelski. Portraits of provincial children from the Russian city of Bryansk are shown by Oleg Vidienin. "Afterworlds" is a series of portraits taken by Jakub Pierzchala, and illuminated by light coming from various objects (like a smartphone screen, a refrigerator). The filmic situations are very cinematic. Olafur Eliasson is the artist I most associate with light, with site-specific, but in the pages of the quarterly we show his photographic works, which are typologies. Naturally staged with painterly light are Tom Hunter's photographs, and "100 Suns" is Michael Light's photographic project about nuclear testing. Ula Tarasiewicz's photographs may seem simple and ascetic, or overloaded with detail. Certainly the author is a keen observer. Ryan McGinley, on the other hand, is a creator of situations and colors of which the exhibition "Moonmilk" is an expression. The emptiness of Icelandic landscapes is shown by amateur Nökkvi Elíasson (in this case, amateur as lover, enthusiast of photography, abandoned buildings, landscapes or homeland). In the "Portfolio of Youth" series "Summer beach" by Anna Kedziora, who showed an alternative to a vacation in Egypt instead landing in a sub-Congolese quarry. Report from Paris Photo 2009, Month of Photography in Bratislava, exhibition: "Photosensitive. Photography Collections at the National Museum in Warsaw", 02 Photo Document Festival in Poznan, Allan Sekula's exhibition "Polonia and Other Stories" and "Zbigniew Libera Works from 1982-2008" in Warsaw's Zachęta Gallery, and about the paradox of Grzegorz Gorczyński's project + texts translated into English
