Description

We show and write about Marek Gardulski and his self-portraits - we used to wonder if they were narcissism, today they would simply be selfies. In 2005, an exhibition with Erwin Olaf's retrospective photos, which comment on reality all the time, visited Poland for the third time. Meanwhile, a few pages away, Danuta Kuciak explores the social psyche in her self-portraits. American photographer and art theorist Allan Sekula in his series "Shipwreck and Workers" presents the problem of depicting less favored people. And then there is the Enfant terrible of documentary photography - Martin Parr! And behind him immediately tires, Maluchy, Trabant and other mermaids in "Life after Life" by Wojciech Wilczyk, that is, old cars used primarily as advertisements for moto-interests existing at the time. By zooming in we get a sneak peek at Marcin Przybyłko's characters, only do we see anything else? In "Portfolio of the Young", urban landscapes by Anna Wawrzkowicz. Why make pinhole photography if you can construct a camera anew? Probably to show autonomy in the totalitarian society in which Miroslav Tichý lived and photographed. The result is dreamlike photographs of women. Alain Balmayer photographs the States "as if he wanted to confront his great masters on their own soil." Tomek Sikora, in "Transparency of Things," applies light-sensitive emulsion to objects and proves how connected we are to things, like relics. Karolina Lewandowska attempts to confront the difficult to classify work of Jerzy Lewczynski. Valery Sawchuk includes the text "The Structure of the Moment in Photography." Finally, Krystyna Muszyńska writes about photography of Africa in the context of Kazimierz Zagorski's exhibition presented in 2005 at the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw.

The events of 2005 that we report on in this issue are FotoArtFestival in Bielsko-Biala and the 10th anniversary Art Forum Berlin, the 17th International Photo Journalism Festival in Perpignan - Visa por l'Image, the exhibition: "Existences. Polish avant-garde photography of the second half of the 1950s". + texts translated into English
