TIFF Biennale of Photography 2023 // Provisioning 8.09-8.10.2023, Wroclaw, Poland.
"Looking Back" is the keynote of the 12th installment of the TIFF Festival, which returns in a new format as a biennial of photography. From September 8 to October 8, the main exhibition and three competitive exhibitions of the TIFF Open section will be presented in four locations. The program will be complemented by three days of opening events, as well as in the following weeks: author meetings, guided tours, discussions and concerts.
When looking for a title for this year's Biennial, we thought about a word that describes the desirable relationship between the person watching and what is observed. We chose "Gazing," which encompasses time, thoughtfulness, attention and forgetfulness of what is happening around. And there - you know - crises: military, economic, psychological, ecological, social and political. - TIFF Photography Biennial organizers and curators Ewa Budnik and Oliwia Drozdowicz comment. - Contemporary events affect us - residents of cities, countries, continents and the planet, and deeply move and sadden us internally. It's easy to fall into marasm, the danger of which Ewa Bińczyk wrote, among others, in "The Age of Man." Alternatives to such a state can be sought in activism, creating communities, experiencing art, but also in the act of resistance associated with the pursuit of pleasure. - they add.
The TIFF Biennial of Photography will draw attention to the soothing and comforting power of images, which can play a significant role in the pursuit of well-being. We will consider whether the pleasure that accompanies an aesthetic experience can become a source of strength and inspiration for taking care of oneself and "co-interns."
The main exhibition, the three exhibitions selected in the TIFF Open competition and the accompanying events will address pleasure, that is, the avoidance of suffering in various ways. They will address the sensually experienced structure of the image, as well as the place of refuge, primitiveness, or direct experience located in the body. The themes explored in the photographs will also address the apparent satisfaction of desires in consumption-driven late capitalism and the organic construction of spirituality. Lectures, discussions and guided tours will expand the range of issues addressed in the artworks to include philosophical, aesthetic and emancipatory interpretations of pleasure.
