The ZPAF Gallery of Photography was established in 2003 on the initiative of the Lower Silesia District of the Union of Polish Artists Photographers in cooperation with Prof. Elżbieta Wernio and the Manufaktura Gallery. From 2003 to 2021 it functioned under the name of Gallery Za Szafą. In November 2021, the gallery's space was enlarged as a result of the renovation of the front part of the premises (previously occupied by the Manufaktura gallery) and the change of its name. Since its inception, it has been located in the premises being the headquarters of the Lower Silesia District of the Union of Polish Art Photographers at 4 St. Martin Street in Wroclaw, in the historic center of the city.

The beginning of the gallery was characterized by an alternation of exhibitions - photography and other visual arts disciplines. These exhibitions were carried out under the direction of Prof. Elżbieta Wernio, who was also responsible for their graphic design. Between 2009 and 2017, the Board of Directors of the IP ZPAF was responsible for the gallery's program, and the gallery was managed by Krzysztof Kowalski. During this period, only photography was presented here. In 2017, the gallery's Program Board was appointed, consisting of: Krzysztof Kowalski, Stanisław Kulawiak and Michał Pietrzak. As of 2023, its members include: Grzegorz Gajos, Michal Pietrzak and Marcin Wiktorski. Its tasks include coordinating the exhibition plan, overseeing the gallery's program line and ensuring the high substantive and thematic quality of the artistic attitudes presented. From 2014 to 2023, Stanislaw Kulawiak was responsible for the design of catalog cards and posters. The creator of the gallery's current layout is Grzegorz Gajos, who from June 2023 is also responsible for developing graphic materials for individual exhibitions. About a dozen exhibitions are held here annually. The manager of the ZPAF Photography Gallery is Krzysztof Kowalski.

The gallery was established to carry out the statutory tasks of the Union of Polish Artists Photographers and to use the potential of its members to create a significant cultural and art promotion center. Individual and collective exhibitions of members of the Union of Polish Art Photographers (ZPAF), candidates for membership in the union and artists showing great creative maturity are presented here.
